Californina St. Albuquerque, NM

 California, SE Address
We were on Aztec for almost two years when the landlord decided to sell the house so we moved to 501 California St. SE. It was a smaller two bedroom in a not so nice neighborhood and we had a very bad landlord. While we were there I worked for a couple of flower shops temporally. The best thing about living there was that we got Kelly. Sandy had to be left alone in the house so much with both of us working we thought a puppy might be good company for her. We adopted a tri-color beagle and basenji cross pup and named her Kelly. She and Sandy did become friends but Kelly was an obnoxious little pup and once while we were gone she must have done something to Sandy that made Sandy snap at her. One of poor Kelly’s long ears must have got caught in Sandy’s teeth and her ear was ripped wide open. Sandy kept trying to hide from us so I think she was upset by what she had done. I know she was just scolding the pup that was picking on her and it happened accidentally. A quick run to the vet and a nights stay and she was home with her ear stitched up. After a few months you couldn’t even tell something had happened to her and eventually Kelly’s ears stood up like a basenji instead of flopping like a beagles. Basenji’s and beagles are both hounds about the same size and color but the basenji has stand up ears and a very curly tail and is supposed to be barkless. They do make a funny yodeling sound which Kelly would do when she was happy but she also barked and did a beagle howl. She did have the black, white, and tan coloring of most beagles which is what the basenji usually has, too.
Kelly and Sandy did become friends but it was Ginger the Siamese cat that adopted Kelly. Ginger made sure to sleep with Kelly and bathe her. I seem to remember Kelly even trying to use the litter box. For a long time the pup must have been very confused as to whether she was a dog or a cat.
I had seen the same thing happen in Idaho when we had the cat, Tom, and we got the puppy, Bonnie. Tom adopted Bonnie and tried to teach her to be a cat. Then we lost Tom and got the cat, Smokey, Bonnie adopted him and tried to teach him to be a dog. Bonnie treated him just like she did her pup, Tag. Tag and Smokey were close to the same age and were good friends like Sandy and Rowdy would be. So many people think you can’t have a dog and cat in the same household but I have seen so many dogs adopt kittens and cats adopt puppies. Even the male dogs and cats will adopt the pup or kitten as Tom did Bonnie. At the time it happened with Tom and Bonnie it seemed very unusual to us and our friends but you hear about it more and more as so many people decide to keep a cat and a dog together. Even more rarely it will happen with two grown animals but usually it is an older animal and a very young one. I’m not saying everyone should even try it because I have seen animals where this never happened when I would have sworn it would. I think it takes two special animals for it to happen. It hasn’t happened in our household for a long time now. We have cats and dogs together that get along just fine but they don’t seem to have that special relationship that some like Tom and Bonnie and Smokey had or like Ginger and Kelly had.
